Bronchoscopy

The paediatric respiratory service provides an acute and elective bronchoscopy service. We perform approximately 50 bronchoscopies/year most of which are performed by the GRID trainee with consultant supervision. The majority of bronchoscopies are performed on the Friday morning endoscopy list every two weeks. This is on the day surgery unit (theatre tel: 743797). The majority of bronchoscopies are performed under general anaesthetic. These bronchoscopies are arranged by Lisa and Leila so please liaise with them. They coordinate with gastroenterology with whom we share the list. Children having bronchoscopy may also be having other tests during an admission, and again this is best coordinated through the secretaries.
Children age < 1 year or with a weight <10kg cannot be managed on the day surgery list and will need to be booked on to the CEPOD list (CEPOD Office: 743099). You will need to discuss this with the on-call paediatric anaesthetist – the CEPOD office will provide you with their name and mobile number. You will also need to request the bronchoscope and stack from endoscopy (tel: 746344) – please ask the consultant which scopes are needed.
All bronchoscopies are documented on the departmental database by the person who performed the procedure.
